To detect insulation defects accompanied by partial discharges in equipment on sulfur hexafluoride, acoustic method is the most effective non-invasive method of diagnostics under operating voltage. The most common switchgears of Russian production are sealed switchgears with sulfur hexafluoride insulation of type ЯЭ-220 and ЯЭ-110 produced by "Electroapparat" St. Petersburg. These switchgears are installed on substations and thermal power stations in Moscow and St. Petersburg. During the last decade acoustic insulation surveys for the presence of partial discharges at these substations have been carried every year, or every two years. These surveys have revealed defects in the insulation of switchgears of 220 kV and 110 kV. These are such defects like burned metal shavings, which form the conductive path on insulator, corona particles; insulators with traces of surface discharges, cracked insulators. Timely repair allows to avoid unplanned outages
